Moving home: keys, remotes and the handover

Plan the key change without treating every access device as one system.

01

Begin with the doors you actually use.

A handover may include a front-door key, a side-door key, a garage remote and a keypad code. Write down which entrance each one operates. A pile of keys does not show which old copies still exist or which doors belong to a shared property.

For a private home, list the keyed exterior doors. For an apartment, separate the private unit from a common building entrance. The residential locksmith page explains why responsibility for the lock matters before a change.

02

Then decide what should change.

If the hardware works smoothly but you want previous keys retired, ask about rekeying compatible locks. State which doors should use the same key, while recognizing that compatibility and condition need confirmation.

If the key is hard to turn or the latch does not hold, include that as a repair concern. A new key-control plan is not a substitute for a door that closes and secures correctly.

03

Put garage access on another line.

Garage remotes, keypad access and a keyed side door are separate systems. Ask about each requested change individually rather than assuming a front-door rekey includes garage controls.

If the garage door is uneven, reverses or stops, describe the movement and compare the wall control with the remote. The garage symptom guide is for safe observations, not adjustments to loaded parts.

04

Finish with permission and scope.

Have the responsible owner or property manager involved where required. Agree which doors and access systems are included, what compatibility needs checking and how additional work would be approved.

Use the pricing questions before arranging the work. In nearby Milton, also confirm the physical address instead of relying only on an Alpharetta mailing label.

The next step is a conversation.

Tell us what has changed.

Start with your actual address and what you can observe. Ask about support, availability and the proposed scope before making arrangements.
